what.are.out.of.battle.abilities?

Out of battle abilities (or OOBAs) are special skills that characters can use for no MP cost to aid in your journey of the world. For example, Swordmasters can cut down some trees, Adepts can illuminate dark caverns, and other things of the sort.

These abilities may be required to advance further in the game. If you find yourself stuck at a point in your quest, it may be time to recruit someone new. In addition, some areas that are explorable for purposes of the main plot, but can be revisited with new OOBAs to further explore and discover hidden treasure.
