Every dimensionist comes with two basic skills: Dimension Bond and Summon. Dimension Bond creates a new dimensional gate by which creatures can be summoned. In addition, if you have any already existing gates open, they are closed. Once a dimensional gate is opened, it remains open for the duration of the battle, so why would it matter if the old ones are closed when new ones are opened? As gates are summoned from, the strength of the creatures that are picked slowly decreases. While you can summon an infinite number of creatures, it's best to "refresh your gates" every once in a while.
Summon is exactly what it sounds like: summon a creature from the gate. Once summoned, the creature becomes an ally character until the end of the battle, or it is destroyed. Summoned creatures can perform any action performable by a normal party member, such as guarding, attacking, defending, or even performing skills.
The first skill dimensionists learn as they level is called Wall of Mirrors. It's a handy defensive skill that is integral to dimensionist combat. It creates a magical barrier that surrounds the caster. When the caster is attacked, the damage received is significantly reduced. The barrier hangs around for several rounds, and weakens as time goes on. However, if your opponents don't feel like waiting for the barrier to fade, they can attack it directly and destroy it. This frees up a valuable turn for the dimensionist to summon a creature, refresh a portal or perform other actions.
Later, after Wall of Mirrors, come the skills Fortify and Amplify. Fortify increases the defensive power of the receiver, and amplify increases the attacking power of the receiver. These skills can be used on any ally, even summoned creatures, and the dimensionists themselves. The power or defense increase slowly fades after several turns, so to maintain their effects, they must be recast once in a while.
